New Seeds from Kenya for the Contract Farming Project

Chef Richard just returned from Kenya where he bought us lots of seeds that we will try in the Village with the Contract Farming Project. Here are some of them:

Two very popular traditional greens that are eaten in Kenya and we want to try here. Burundians love greens, as part of a sauce.

Neither long-leaf spinach nor 'sauce' tomatoes are available here. We grew them last year and they were very popular

Two other veggies we can't get here - collards and long-ribbed celery. Grew lots of collards ('sukuma wiki') last year and it was a great hit.

Rucola (Rocket) that Alfredo brought from Italy, and Coriander from Kenya - also not available here.

Although developed for tropical plantings, these 2 will be long shots.

Now the extensive flooding in the village that destroyed a lot of our plantings has gone down, so we can begin new gardens. We have replanted the spinach and kale, and also have put in seedlings for six of the above. I will take pictures and put up another blog on progress, and also on our new site for small women’s plots, which will be located here:

All of this area, up to the camera, was flooded for several days and destroyed crops of many people.

The picture below shows part of the new area, which is above the flooding, which will be partitioned into small plots for women contractees.  In front are pieces of cassava being dried in the sun.
